An unfortunate close encounter with Windows Update has rendered all of my microphones incapable of recording anything, which is a significant problem if your job is, for example, recording commentary for YouTube videos! For anyone interested, here are the technical details:
1. Windows Update has 21 "Important Updates" for me to install. Great.
2. Suddenly my Rode Podcaster USB mic stops working while doing a video commentary.
3. My Logitech G35 headset mic won't work either.
4. Opening the Recording Devices tab on my System Sound panel freezes the whole System Sound panel.
5. Unplugging the G35 allows me to start clicking on things on the Recording Devices tab, but the "levels" on the Rode mic is just a blank page.
6. Windows sits there, with a big smile on it's fat ugly face, telling me "This device is working properly."
7. There are no drivers to update, both microphones are USB devices.
8. Uninstalling and reinstalling both devices doesn't change anything.
9. I try to rollback to a System Restore point before the Windows Update that ruined everything. System Restore fails.
10. I try to uninstall and reverse the 21 latest Windows Updates, since one of them caused the problem. Four of them refuse to uninstall, and the problem remains unsolved.
11. I try to do a Repair Reinstall of Windows, but I can't find my Windows 7 DVD. I can find my Windows XP disc though. Typical.
12. I spend about five hours backing everything up on Friday night, ready to go into town and buy a copy of Windows so I can reinstall everything over the weekend. No-one has any copies of Windows 7, and I don't hate myself quite enough to install Windows 8.
13. Okay screw it, I'll install Windows 8. Except no-one has any full install dics, just the upgrade discs, and for that, you also need your (you guessed it) original Windows7 discs.
14. I give up, go home, and order a copy of Windows 7 from Amazon. Of course it won't be here before Monday, and I'll have to spend most of Monday night reinstalling EVERYTHING.
15. There is of course, no guarantee even this is going to work. But it should.
So. Two lessons here. Windows Update is evil. And keep your Windows installation discs close.
